The St. Joe Valley Search and Rescue, under the direction of the Sheriff’s Office is an all-volunteer organization consisting of approximately fifty members.
While the focus of the search and rescue unit is saving lives, search and rescue also participates in evidence recovery, traffic/parking control, public awareness classes, body recovery and various other uses where the Sheriff’s office has need for volunteers. Search and Rescue also employs the use of canines, horses, boats, ATVs, snowmobiles and aircraft to aid in their missions.
Volunteers for Search and Rescue are very community oriented and are among the first in our community to volunteer. These are the unsung heroes of Benewah County. They risk their lives to save our loved ones from harm, or to return their remains to families when harm befalls them. These people do this neither for fame nor glory as many times their acts go completely unnoticed by the public at large. They do this because of a deep commitment and love for the people of Benewah County and a desire to help those in need.
Our Search and Rescue volunteers work year round maintaining and improving their ability to do the difficult job that they are tasked with and have had many successes where we were able to return loved ones to their anxiously awaiting family members.
